MOMS TURN THEIR NEW SKILLS INTO THEIR BREAD AND BUTTER

Jasmin, Estela, Jahayda, Eveseit, Juana, Pamela, María, and Ruth might make fluffy pastries, but these mothers are made of tougher stuff.

Thanks to everyone who gave the gift of skills training through our Gift Catalog, they and a dozen other mothers embarked on a six-month baking course.

The Cañete sponsor site has been running their "Women in Command" skills training series for mothers of sponsored children for several years. Popular courses are manicures, cosmetology, and baking/confection; all of which are in-demand skills in their neighborhoods. Previous graduates have had great success with their small businesses after going through the program.

Peruvians know their desserts, and there’s no such thing as a fiesta without sweets. Taking orders for occasions and parties can be good business for an aspiring entrepreneur.

“Studying pastry-making was my lifelong dream, and today, I am elated to see it come true,” says Jasmin. Her two boys were sponsored in 2020. As soon as she finished the course, she launched her own business, making cakes and snacks from home. She dubbed her business 'Las Delicias de Jasgaliam,’ a creative combination of the letters in her family’s names.

“I cannot express enough thanks for all that has been provided to me, especially now that I am contributing financially to my household,” Jasmin says.

“I was fortunate to have an exceptional teacher who taught me how to prepare a variety of desserts," says María, the mother of Matías and Lian.

"I feel truly happy to have completed the pastry course,” María says.  “I have gained invaluable knowledge.  Recently, I started offering some of these delicious desserts to my friends and neighbors, and they love them."

Jahayda, a mother of four, has been active in the Chalice site since 2018. Three of her children are sponsored and have been stand-outs in their classes. Her third, Julio, has had to overcome some greater learning challenges, and she is very proud of his achievements. When she founded her snack-making business, she named it 'Pasteleria Julio.’

"I feel happy and satisfied with the support received from Chalice,” Jahayda says, “which has not only helped me financially but also spiritually, providing guidance to strengthen my home."
